Our latest ‘I’ve got an Idea’ Fund award goes to Melissa Elliott of Safeguard Autonomy Ltd. Melissa is interested in simple, accessible technology that gives children another way to communicate a need for support in a classroom situation where attracting an adult’s attention may be difficult. Her earlier research shows that education professionals find sensory overwhelm can go unnoticed in classrooms, including among quieter pupils and children experiencing shutdown. Her idea is to use a discreet removable textile interface that a child deliberately swipes to send a private offline request for support to a caregiver or member of staff. Our award will help Melissa to bench test an experimental prototype of her idea. We wish Melissa well in testing and progressing her novel approach to a difficult problem some children face.
